Sanjay Raut: Ruling Parties Scared of Opposition, Weakens Democracy

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut launched a strong verbal assault on the ruling parties in Maharashtra on Saturday. He highlighted their failure to appoint Leaders of the Opposition (LoP) in the state legislature, arguing that this reflects a pervasive fear of democratic scrutiny. This absence, according to Raut, undermines essential constitutional processes.

Speaking to reporters, Raut expressed his concern, stating, “It is a matter of shame that Maharashtra currently has no Leader of the Opposition in either House of the legislature.” He further emphasized, “It is a democratic necessity to have a Leader of Opposition in municipal corporations, state assemblies, and Parliament. It is also a constitutional requirement.” His remarks underscore the critical role that the LoP plays in ensuring a balanced political discourse.

Raut attributed this ongoing situation to systematic efforts over the past decade to undermine the appointment of LoPs through various electoral manipulations and political pressures. He charged that the BJP, which currently leads the government in Maharashtra, has consistently aimed to weaken and insult the LoP institution. “Legislative business is being conducted without an LoP, which clearly shows the ruling parties are afraid of the post,” he criticized.

Pointing out Maharashtra’s historical respect for democratic processes, Raut reminded that the state has a significant tradition of appointing Leaders of the Opposition, even when opposition parties had inferior numerical strength. He noted, “Even when the BJP did not have sufficient numbers in Parliament, it was still granted the LoP position. This tradition is now being deliberately dismantled.”

The opposition in Maharashtra has been vocal about appointing Leaders of Opposition in both Houses of the legislature. The Shiv Sena (UBT) has nominated Bhaskar Jadhav for the Legislative Assembly, while the Congress party has proposed Satej Patil for the Legislative Council, illustrating the opposition’s determination to fill these vital roles.

In addition to his critique of the ruling parties, Raut also expressed strong opposition to recent comments from Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who suggested the possibility of creating a separate Vidarbha state. Raut alleged that this proposal had the tacit backing of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, stating, “Shiv Sena (UBT) will strongly oppose any attempt to divide Maharashtra. The state’s unity is non-negotiable.”

Raut highlighted the recent debate in Parliament concerning the national anthem, where he observed that the ruling BJP seemed unsettled by the presence and performance of Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. He remarked, “There was visible enthusiasm in the debate because of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. It reinforced the belief that democracy is alive.” Such observations reinforce the sentiment that opposition voices invigorate parliamentary discussions.

Finally, Raut has also called for a discussion on the Maharashtra Geet in the state legislature, arguing that it would stimulate vital discourse on the contributions of various leaders and movements that have shaped the identity of Maharashtra and Mumbai. The fervor for these discussions reflects the growing concern among the opposition regarding the health of democracy in the state and the need to prioritize the voices that matter.
