Jammu’s Development Under Omar Abdullah: Dr Farooq Abdullah

Former Chief Minister and National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah stated today that Jammu is moving towards inclusive development under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Abdullah emphasized that the region now enjoys sustainable development, distancing itself from the empty promises of previous regimes.

At a meeting with a National Conference delegation, Dr Abdullah noted that the current government has restored confidence in democratic processes, granting common citizens access to power corridors. His remarks come during a critical time as Jammu seeks to build a stable political environment.

The delegation shared long-standing public grievances that they attributed to a decade of misrule under the BJP. They expressed appreciation for the corrective actions undertaken by the Omar Abdullah-led government, aimed at addressing issues that have historically plagued Jammu.

In addressing party organization, Dr Abdullah reassured members that the National Conference remains attuned to the struggles of the people, particularly after years marked by undemocratic governance.

Dr Abdullah asserted, “The Omar Abdullah-led government is making rapid strides to restore people’s faith in democratic institutions.” This statement reflects the government’s intent to engage with citizens and revitalize local governance.

While discussing the much-debated Smart City project, he criticized its ineffective implementation, stating that recent rainfall and resulting waterlogging showcased the inadequacies of the plan. Such observations underscore the need for actionable solutions in Jammu’s urban development.

Additionally, Dr Farooq Abdullah highlighted the government’s initiatives, including the restoration of the historic Mubarak Mandi heritage complex and free transport for women, aiming to boost mobility. He pointed out that enhanced ration quotas have alleviated concerns for underprivileged families.

Moreover, he noted that reviving the Darbar Move has invigorated economic activity, providing relief to Jammu’s trading community. Upcoming projects, such as ropeways and lakes in Jammu city, are set to position Jammu on the national tourism map.

Looking ahead, Dr Abdullah urged party supporters to prepare actively for the upcoming Urban Local Body (ULB) and Panchayat elections. He highlighted the importance of inclusive governance, demanding special attention to youth representation and women’s involvement.

In a related initiative, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called upon Gujjar institutions to conduct scientific research on the effects of climate change and reservation policies on the Gujjar-Bakerwal community. This call for research aims to develop more effective policies for the community.

Addressing an audience at the Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust (GDCT), Jammu, on the third death anniversary of visionary educationist Dr Masud Ahmed Choudhary, the Chief Minister emphasized the capacity of Gujjar institutions. He remarked, “There is no dearth of talent among the Gujjars. By focusing on climate change research, we can empower our community.”

Omar Abdullah highlighted the unique vulnerabilities of the nomadic Gujjar-Bakerwal community to climate change and emphasized the need for better education facilities like Gujjar hostels, schools, and mobile education units.

Moreover, he called for a detailed assessment of reservation policies, stating, “While we discuss reservation, analytical studies on its benefits are conspicuously absent.” This statement indicates a push towards evidence-based policymaking.

Echoing the call for unity, former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah reminded the Gujjar community to prioritize education. He stated, “Education is the key to securing the future of our upcoming generations.”

The gathering included several Ministers, MLAs, former Ministers, senior advocates, civil society leaders, and representatives from the Gujjar community, highlighting a collaborative approach to addressing community needs.
