An Air India Express flight, carrying 160 passengers, made a precautionary landing at Cochin International Airport on Thursday after experiencing issues with the aircraft’s tyres. The flight, originally traveling from Jeddah to Kozhikode, was diverted due to safety concerns.
Airline officials reported that the Jeddah–Kozhikode flight (IX 398) diverted to Kochi when the crew detected a possible tyre-related issue mid-flight. An Air India Express spokesperson stated, “The aircraft made a precautionary landing due to suspected damage to the aircraft’s tyre, likely caused by a foreign object on the runway at Jeddah airport.”
Clarifying the situation, the spokesperson emphasized that only the tyres were affected and that there was no issue with the landing gear. “It was not an emergency landing. The flight was diverted as a precautionary measure since Kozhikode’s Karipur airport is a tabletop airport,” added the official, highlighting the airline’s commitment to passenger safety.
The aircraft landed safely at Kochi, and all passengers were unharmed during the incident. The airline arranged for alternate road transport for the passengers heading to Kozhikode. “All guests are being connected to Kozhikode by road. We regret the inconvenience caused and reiterate that safety remains our highest priority,” the spokesperson reassured the public.
In response to the incident, Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) reported that it facilitated the safe landing of the aircraft at 9.07 am. The diversion resulted from a technical issue concerning the right main landing gear and tyre failure. All emergency services were activated beforehand, ensuring a swift response.
A spokesperson from CIAL confirmed, “There were no injuries to passengers or crew. Post-landing inspection confirmed that both right-side tyres had burst.” Following the incident, the airport authority inspected the runway, which was cleared and restored to normal operations promptly.
This incident underscores the importance of rigorous safety protocols in aviation. Air India Express aims to ensure the security and comfort of its passengers. By swiftly addressing the situation, the airline has demonstrated its dedication to maintaining high safety standards.
Passengers aboard flights often face anxiety over such unforeseen events, but the smooth operation following the precautionary landing highlights the effectiveness of training and safety measures enforced by airlines. Aviation experts urge travelers to trust in the stringent safety checks and quick response strategies that modern airlines, like Air India Express, employ.
Overall, the incident concluded without significant disruption, allowing passengers to continue their journey with minimal delays. As this event illustrates, safety is paramount in the aviation industry, and proactive measures are crucial in safeguarding lives.
